Creating Space for Foster Youth to Build Confidence in Learning
The individuals that TriTogether works with, children and teens in foster care, have many complex needs which are urgently being addressed making it is easy to miss if they’re falling behind in class, that they’re not turning in homework, or that they’re disengaged from school. In the last year, TriTogether and CASA Project Worcester County (CASA) have partnered to make sure the youth CASA works with are also getting the educational support that they need. CASA volunteers, so in tune with the needs of the youth they serve, have been the perfect examples of what it means to support a child wholistically.
TriTogether provides free virtual tutoring to youth in foster care, in kinship care, and adopted out of foster care in Massachusetts. As a small organization, we strive to ensure we get our referrals from those who understand the children they are working with and can help us engage with those students. During the 2025-2026 school year, TriTogether worked with more than 30 students, some coming from CASA referrals, and provided tutoring to students from kindergarten to adulthood in a wide variety of subjects.
What patterns have we noticed? Through all the chaos that these kids are going through, they manage to persevere. That, in itself, is an achievement. Then, they have to go to school all day, having potentially missed school, changed schools, etc., and try to keep up with their classmates, many of whom do not have similar trauma. It’s no wonder that we see our students start with very low confidence in their ability to learn, whether it be reading, math, or anything in between.
Our goal starts with building their confidence. Once a student believes in their ability to achieve, academically and otherwise, the world opens up. When we let students fall through the cracks and fall behind, we inadvertently take opportunities away from them and make their day that much harder. This is something that our partners at CASA deeply understand and appreciate, and is part of why working with them has been so successful.
