Meryl’s Safe Haven is dedicated to providing shelter, support, and hope for young people aging out of the Department of Children and Families’ (DCF) care, while also offering resources and a safe space for families in need. Founded in honor of Dr. Cerezo’s late aunt, Meryl, who passed away in 2022, this mission continues her legacy of compassion and care.
Dr. Cerezo remembers a conversation with Meryl when they first talked about creating a space for young people aging out of foster care. As a pre-adoptive parent, Dr. Cerezo said, “Do you know how difficult this will be?” in reference to the project they were about to undertake. Meryl’s reply was both simple and powerful: “I never said I would be there, I just said I would run it.”
Now, two years into operation, both of their words have proven true. The work is incredibly challenging, and though Meryl is no longer here to physically run it, her spirit and vision continue to inspire and guide the work of Meryl’s Safe Haven (MSH) every day.
Meryl’s vision was to create a space where young people could thrive with the supports they need. MSH provides transitional housing, career and educational assistance, financial literacy programs, trauma recovery resources, and a dedicated team to help youth achieve their goals. This organization directly impacts and serves young people aged 18-24 who are economically disadvantaged, aging out of foster care, and either currently facing housing insecurity or at risk of it.
What began with just one staff volunteer has now grown into a team of 11. Since January 2024, MSH has supported over 50 families. By October 31, 2024, a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Transitional Youth Empowerment Program was held and marked a pivotal milestone. Then, on March 10, 2025, MSH opened its doors to place its first two young adults in stable housing. This was a powerful moment that showcased the true realization of the organization’s mission. MSH has since reviewed more than 15 referrals for the Transitional Youth Empowerment Program. The shortage of transitional housing is a significant challenge, and MSH is dedicated to addressing this by providing a supportive environment that encourages self-sufficiency. As the need for housing and emergency assistance continues to rise, MSH goes beyond offering just shelter — it creates a community that fosters personal growth, independence, and long-term success.
Meryl’s Safe Haven invites both individuals and organizations to become part of the effort to make a lasting difference. There are several ways to help. Donations provide housing and essential resources for those in need, while volunteers can mentor, offer skills training, and assist with events. Spreading awareness by sharing Meryl’s Safe Haven’s mission helps to reach more people who can benefit from their services. Additionally, visiting Meryl’s Safe Haven’s website and reading the blog offers a deeper understanding of their journey and continued impact.
Meryl’s Safe Haven is more than just an organization — it serves as a vital resource for young people transitioning out of foster care and families facing housing insecurity. With a dedicated team and a powerful vision, Dr. Tasia Cerezo continues to break down barriers, providing the essential support young adults need to build their futures. Through MSH’s work, young people gain stability, independence, and a clear path forward.
Originally from Miami, FL, Dr. Tasia Cerezo made her way to Massachusetts to serve as an AmeriCorps member. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in education, and a doctorate in higher education leadership. CASA is honored to have Dr. Cerezo share her story and mission, as her work with Meryl’s Safe Haven (MSH) embodies the value of supporting young people and families in need, particularly those aging out of the foster care system.
Driven by her commitment to bridge the gap between higher education and the communities they serve, Dr. Cerezo has continually sought opportunities to break down barriers. Meryl’s Safe Haven is a natural extension of this mission. As a co-founder, she plans to leverage her expertise to provide comprehensive support to housing-insecure families, aiming to break the cycle of poverty.
