Name

Karen Dixon

How long have you been a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate)?

More than two years.

What inspired you to become a CASA volunteer?

I have always been interested in social work and psychology, which is what I studied in college. My passion and interest in this was fueled early on by my mother, who was a teacher in the Worcester SAM (School Aged Mothers) program for 25 years. She taught me compassion, and I saw first–hand how impactful it can be to serve a community that needed a lot of support, and what positive outcomes looked like when that support was provided. It wasn’t until a college friend of mine became a CASA volunteer that I realized there was nothing stopping me from becoming a volunteer myself. What I love about CASA is that I’m able to truly make a positive impact for a child or children in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. I also love learning about the juvenile court and its processes.

What do you want our supporters to know about your background?

I am a marketing professional, most recently the head of marketing for a legal practice management software company. My high EQ (Emotional Intelligence) is a skill set that elevates my ability to connect with other people – my teams at work, my family, and likely also the youth I serve as a CASA volunteer – and likely why I enjoy the role so much.  I love connection and the feeling of being helpful. My proudest accomplishments are my two children, Charlie and Alex.

What are your interests and favorite hobbies?

I love to travel with my family when I can.  I also enjoy reading, anything outdoors (often with my dog Nia), and being creative.
