Name
Maria Laurence
How long have you been a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate)?
One year, I completed my training in March 2025.
What inspired you to become a CASA volunteer?
Years ago, I learned about CASA from a young lady with an intellectual disability who had a CASA volunteer appointed to her case. Her CASA was someone on whom she knew she could always rely, and who spoke up for her and helped her obtain what she needed. After looking into the CASA organization, becoming a CASA became a goal of mine. Once I semi-retired, I was able to dedicate my time to such an involved volunteer position, so I reached out to begin the process of becoming a CASA.
What do you want our supporters to know about your background?
Throughout my career, I have worked with people with intellectual disabilities in a variety of capacities, including direct roles and support coordination. Some of my later work involved court cases that addressed both individual and systemic issues, requiring me to complete investigations, develop reports for lawyers and the court, and present findings in courtrooms. The responsibilities of a CASA volunteer dovetailed nicely with many of my skills.
What are your interests and favorite hobbies?
Some of my hobbies include reading, travelling, and photography. My family and friends sometimes refer to me as “Julie McCoy,” because I love to plan adventures ranging from trying new restaurants to exploring the local community to venturing out to visit different parts of the world. I also dabble in knitting, creative writing, and have recently begun taking weaving classes.
Is there anything else you would like to share with our community?
For anyone considering becoming a CASA, I highly recommend it. The children to whom I have been assigned are an inspiration, particularly their perseverance considering the challenges they and their families face. The CASA role provides a real opportunity to make a difference in their lives. The training and support provided by the CASA team is incredible. Another benefit is the community of dedicated and friendly volunteers, and the numerous CASA-sponsored activities.
